Johannes Gutenberg, born around 1400 in Mainz, is regarded as the inventor of letterpress printing with movable letters, ie stamps with characters, which were used individually for text printing. These movable letters have been known from East Asia since the 11th century. But Gutenberg's invention went beyond that. The heart of his innovation was the hand-pouring device, in which all letters and characters could be poured into letters in unlimited numbers by means of an inserted negative mold. Between 1452 and 1455, the legendary Gutenberg Bible was created, an astounding work of 1,280 pages and the highest typographic beauty. Johannes Gutenberg died on February 3, 1468 in Mainz.
