Founded in 1951 in the turmoil of the Cold War - in West Berlin, which was already formally separated from the Eastern sector - the Film Festival quickly established itself as a cultural summer festival of high international standing. In 1974, a Soviet film took part in the competition of the Berlin Film Festival for the first time, followed a year later by a contribution from the GDR. In 1987, the Berlinale was the festival of Soviet glasnost. The German reunification in 1990 became an absolute highlight in the history of the International Film Festival: By expanding the venues to the eastern part of the city, the Berlinale demonstrated its cross-border ambitions.
