Born on June 11, 1864 in Munich, Richard Strauss was conductor of the Meininger Hofkapelle in 1885/86, then Kapellmeister in Munich (1886/87), Weimar (1889 to 1894) and Berlin (1898 to 1919). In the years 1919 to 1924 he led the Vienna State Opera together with Franz Schalk. During his time in Berlin and Vienna Strauss devoted himself more and more to composing.
