The painter and etcher Rudolf Jettmar, who was born in Galicia (now Poland) in Austria at that time, showed artistic talent at an early age. After completing his education at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts and the Academy of Prints and Drawings of the Vienna Academy, in 1898 he became a member of the artists' association "Wiener Secession". In 1910 he became a full professor at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts. In 1929 he took over as successor to Ferdinand Schmutzer the management of the master school of graphics, which he held until his retirement in 1936. Jettmar can be considered as one of the most important representatives of European symbolism. Among his most important graphic works are the "Hours of the Night", the two "Prometheus" etchings (1910 and 1916) and above all the eight etchings of the cycle "Cain" after Lord Byron (1919-1920) One of his major works is arguably the largest picture composition from his hand, "Battle of the Amazon." Jettmar's last years were clouded by illness, and he died on 21 April 1939 in Vienna as a result of a stroke.
