It was the idea of a German philatelist (Hans von Rudolphi), but Austrian collector friends were the first to put it into action: on 1 December 1935, a special exhibition on the "Stamp Day" was held in Vienna at the Museum of Art and Industry. Only 5 weeks later, on January 7, 1836, German collectors followed suit and celebrated the »Stamp Day« for the first time in the Berlin Zoo Festival Hall. At the same time, the foundation of the "Reich Association of Philatelists", the predecessor of today's top association of organized philately, the Association of German Philatelists e.V. (BDPh). This first »Stamp Day« in Germany became a great success with a broad international response. Thus, the members of the Fédération Internationale de Philatelie (FIP) decided at its 11th World Congress in Luxembourg at the end of August 1936 to introduce a "Stamp Day" internationally. The deadline for all countries was fixed on the first Sunday after January 7 (birthday of the former master postmaster Heinrich v. Stephan). However, this date has been given up over the years; a Sunday in October was more and more the general agreement. In 1941, the first special stamp of the German Reichspost appeared for the "Stamp Day". More followed in the years 1942 to 1944. After the war, there were first in the 50s special stamps for the "Stamp Day", published by the German Federal Post, the State Post Office Berlin and the postal administration in the Saarland, which was economically affiliated to France until the end of 1956 , Barely 40 years after his birth, the "Stamp Day" - again in Berlin - enjoyed a renaissance: BDPh President Dr. Ing. Heinz Jaeger gave the starting signal for the annual nationwide action "Stamp Day" on September 21, 1975 at the 76th German Philatelist Day in the Berlin Congress Hall. From now on, the philatelists in our country celebrate their feast day after year on the last Sunday in October. For this occasion, the Deutsche Bundespost regularly devotes a commemorative stamp to all collector friends. The Association of German Philatelists has proclaimed the jubilee year 1986 as the »Year of the Stamp«. With increased activities in 1986 more than 1,500 BDPh clubs and youth groups present to a broad public the hobby stamp collecting as meaningful leisure activity with cultural claim. A special show entitled "50 Years of the Stamp Day" travels through West Berlin and around 50 other cities and towns in Germany to attract new collectors. It was compiled by the Bund Deutscher Philatelisten and supported by the Foundation for the Promotion of Philately and Postal History.
