Johann Lukas von Hildebrandt is considered one of the most important representatives of the "Austrian Baroque". He was born in 1668 in Genoa, the son of a German-born captain of the Genoese army. In 1696 he came to Vienna, where in 1700 he was appointed "Kayserlichen Hoff engineer". From 1711 he held the office of the head of the yard construction office. Despite this influential position, he had by the competition of Johann Bernhard, the father of Joseph Emanuel Fischer von Erlach, only rarely orders from the court circles. He found his predominant field of responsibility in the field of secular and sacral buildings for high spiritual and secular dignitaries. Of particular importance was his acquaintance with Friedrich Carl Graf Schönborn and Prince Eugene of Savoy. In addition to the palaces for the Duke of the Turks Prinz Eugen as the lower and Upper Belvedere still erected on the Vienna Freyung for Count Wierich Philip Daun Palais Daun-Kinsky must be highlighted as a masterpiece of Hildebrandt. The gifted architect died in 1745 in Vienna.
