The works of the Prussian master builder Carl Gotthard Langhans (1732-1808) are among the earliest buildings of German classicism, based on ancient models. The native Silesian had studied mathematics in Halle, but was not a trained architect. He acquired his knowledge of architectural styles and techniques in self-study. Nevertheless, during his lifetime he was the most important master builder in Berlin and decisively influenced the image of the city in the second half of the 18th century. His most famous work is the Brandenburg Gate, other buildings still existing today are the Schlosstheater Charlottenburg, the interior of the Marble Palace in the New Garden of Potsdam and the dance hall in the Bellevue Palace.
