On August 28, 1749, Goethe was born in Frankfurt am Main. 1770/71 he graduated in Strasbourg from his law studies in Leipzig with the licentiate exam. At the court of Karl August, Duke of Saxe-Weimar, he was in 1779 Privy Council, 1782 President of the Chamber of Finance. After traveling to Italy, he took over the direction of the Court Theater in Weimar in 1791. Three years later, he began collaborating with Friedrich Schiller. No other German poet created such a wide-ranging life's work as Goethe, consisting of poetic, but almost equally extensive, critical and scientific writings ("Farbenlehre," 1810). Johann Wolfgang von Goethe died on March 22, 1832 in Weimar.
