Leo von Klenze is considered one of the most important classicist architects in Germany. The master builder, painter and draftsman was born on February 29, 1784 in Schladen near Wolfenbüttel. His first work was the Ballhaus am Schloss Wilhelmshöhe in Kassel. As court architect of the Bavarian King Ludwig I, he created his most important works. His task was to make squares and streets in Munich in the classical style uniform. These included the Königsplatz, the Hall of Fame, the Glyptothek and the Alte Pinakothek. As an architect, he also designed the Walhalla near Regensburg, the New Hermitage in St. Petersburg and the Liberation Hall in Kelheim. The honorary citizen of the city of Munich died there on January 27, 1864 at the age of 79 years.
