He is one of the most important German-speaking writers of the 19th century. The Austrian Adalbert Stifter was born on October 23, 1805 in the South Bohemian town of Oberplan. He studied law in Vienna, worked as a tutor, painter and writer. In 1840 Stifter published his first stories. He moved to Linz, became a school counselor in 1850 and, in 1852, conservator of monument preservation in Upper Austria. On January 28, 1868, he died in Linz. His best-known works include the story "Bergkristall" as well as the novels "Der Nachsommer" and "Witiko". Numerous schools in Germany are named after the founder, whose works are still read in school lessons today. Stifter's landscape descriptions are regarded as highlights of German literature.
