The Edict of Tolerance of Joseph II of October 13, 1781 put an end to the lawless existence of Lutheran and Helvetic Christians in the Habsburg hereditary lands. At the same time, this edict justified the legal existence of the Protestant church of Augsburg and Helvetic creeds. Since October 13, 1781 there is therefore in Austria a Protestant church system. In order to preserve the unity of the Christian religion in the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation, the Habsburg emperors of Charles V up to and including Maria Theresia issued energetic prohibitions against the Protestant faith. When Joseph II opened the gates to the Protestant underground Christians with his Toleration Patent, he ended decades of oppression. He also tolerated no contradictions of his mother Maria Theresa, as can be seen from the correspondence he had with her. The stamp motif shows a portrait of Josef II., Who as a "people's emperor" never forgot the citizens of his country in all his political decisions.
