Born on September 1, 1854 in Siegburg, the composer Engelbert Humperdinck graduated in music from 1872 at the Cologne Conservatory and from 1876 in Munich. In 1879 he was the first to receive the prize for composition of the Felix Mendelssohn Foundation. From 1880 to 1882 Humperdinck was an associate of Richard Wagner in Bayreuth. With a forward-looking melodrama technique (»Sprechgesang«) he proved his stylistic independence from Wagner. Humperdinck's opera "Hansel and Gretel" was premiered on December 23, 1893 in Weimar under the direction of Richard Strauss. Overall, Humperdinck created six operas and set plays, for example, dramas by William Shakespeare. Humperdinck died on September 27, 1921 in Neustrelitz.
