Carl Freiherr von Hasenauer was born on July 20, 1833, the son of k.k. Hof and Stadtzimmermeister Christoph Hasenauer born. He attended the architectural department of the "Imperial Academy of United Fine Arts", headed by Professors Eduard van der Nüll and August Siccardsburg. Hasenauer's strong decorative talent was not only recognized by these artists, but also decisively influenced and promoted. On 10 October 1853 he received his diploma from the Academy and in 1854 he experienced the first peak of his career with the awarding of the "Grand Prize for Architecture" at the Academy of Fine Arts. His greatest success was the planning and construction of the Kunsthistorisches and Naturhistorisches Museum, which he carried out together with the architect Gottfried Semper. In the late autumn of 1871, the construction of the two museum buildings began, and since Hasenauer was appointed Chief Architect of the Vienna World's Fair in 1873, Semper initially bore the brunt of the museum project. For his achievements in the course of the World Fair Hasenauer was elevated to the hereditary, Austrian peerage. After the end of his work for the World Exhibition Hasenauer devoted himself intensively to the two already advanced museum buildings and the 1874 begun construction of the Burgtheater. The exterior of the museums was completed in 1881, the interior lasted until 1889, or 1891st The Burgtheater was inaugurated in 1888. Carl Freiherr von Hasenauer died on 4 January 1894 at the age of 61.
