The comedian, author, folk singer and film producer Karl Valentin was born on June 4, 1882 as Valentin Ludwig Fey in Munich. The trained joiner became known for his imaginative language games and his grotesque body language. Together with his stage partner Liesl Karlstadt, he thrilled audiences in cabarets and cinemas with slapstick-like interludes as well as with subversive dialogues. Recurring motifs of his pieces were the perils of everyday life and the confrontation with authorities. His skits are still on the schedules of many theaters around the world. Karl Valentin died in 1948 in Planegg near Munich.
