The Council of Europe was declared a Year of Historic Monuments in 1975, with an emphasis on the preservation and revitalization of the historically valuable architectural heritage. The member states of the Council of Europe wanted to emphasize the need to preserve and protect Europe's historically grown and valuable cultural heritage. The monument protection in Austria is the official responsibility of the Federal Monuments Office (it celebrated its 125th anniversary in 1975) and the Federal Ministry of Science and Research. Numerous measures were planned and carried out by the Federal Ministry of Science and Research in order to promote and document the conservation year. Information events, competitions, exhibitions and many other activities should raise public awareness of the value of Austria's cultural heritage. The stamp shows the upper part of the figure of Saint Christopher from the winged altar in the parish church of Kefermarkt in Upper Austria. In the efforts to preserve this altar, the Federal Monuments Office has earned special merit.
