Born on July 11, 1906 in Dresden, Herbert Wehner joined the KPD in 1927 and quickly took over important functions there. So he was among others from 1929 to 1931 Member of the Saxon State Parliament and from 1931 Technical Secretary of the Politburo in Berlin. After Wehner was arrested in Sweden in 1942 by the local police on charges of espionage for the Soviet Union and sentenced to several years in prison, the KPD expelled him from their ranks. After his return to Germany Wehner 1946 joined the Hamburg SPD. In 1949 he took over the chairmanship of the Bundestag Committee for All-German issues and retained this function until 1966. 1969 to 1983 he was SPD parliamentary group chairman. Herbert Wehner died on 19 January 1990.
