Stefan Andres was one of the most widely read writers in Germany in the 1950s. His texts such as "El Greco paints the Grand Inquisitor" (1936) or "We are Utopia" (1943) other works such as dramas, poetry cycles, essays, radio plays and speeches fostered discussions about the experiences of the dictatorship and the war. Andres was born in 1906 as the ninth child of a Müller family in the community Trittenheim on the Moselle. He attended a monastery school and was to become a priest, but then studied German, art history and philosophy in Cologne, Jena and Berlin. In 1937 he settled in Italy with his family. After the war, Andres returned to Germany, lived in Unkel am Rhein and finally went back to Italy, where he died in 1970 in Rome.
