In honor of the great inventor who saw the light of day a hundred years ago, this commemorative stamp appears. The named after him diesel engine, whose development was completed shortly before the turn of the century, has been continuously adapted to the other technical findings and is still being rebuilt in principle throughout the world today. The artists invited to work on the design of the stamp were free to either represent the machine alone as the epitome of the life of the person to be honored or his portrait. But even a combination of these two elements should be allowed, for which exceptionally an elongated brand format could be chosen. Of all three possibilities, the graphic designers have made use of it. Prof. Hermann Schardt and Prof. Paul Dietrich have each come up with a draft, and Müller and Blase have come up with three proposals. The Federal Minister of Posts and Telecommunications decided on the design by Prof. Hermann Schardt with the portrayal of Rudolf Diesel and his engine. Bundesdruckerei Berlin has designed the stamp in monochrome intaglio printing in blue-green tone.
