Max Schmeling is still the only German who was boxing champion of all classes. He was born on September 28, 1905 in Klein-Luckow (Uckermark). At age 19, he began his career as a boxing professional and in 1930 world heavyweight champion. Schmeling married the famous film actress Anny Ondra. In the most famous fight of his career Schmeling struck in 1936 the hitherto undefeated American Joe Louis after twelve rounds K.o. The Second World War interrupted his boxer career, which he resumed after 1945 only for a few fights. As a sports idol for fair play, sports official and successful businessman, he enjoyed a high level of social standing. On February 2, 2005, Max Schmeling died at the age of 99 in Hollenstedt near Hamburg.
