Born on March 2, 1900 in Dessau, Kurt Weill moved to Berlin in 1918 to study music. Among other things, the ballet pantomime »The Magic Night« was created there. In one of the performances of this piece, he met both his later wife Lotte Lenya and the opera dramatist Georg Kaiser, with whom he wrote the operatic character »The Protagonist«. His reputation as an opera composer was justified. The "Threepenny Opera" developed together with Bertolt Brecht finally made him world famous. In 1933, Weill escaped from the Nazis, against whom he subsequently became heavily involved, from Germany and eventually became an American citizen. He died on April 3, 1950 in New York.
