Kurt Schumacher was born on October 13, 1895 in Culm. At the outbreak of the First World War, he passed the emergency exam. As a war volunteer, he lost after severe injury on the eastern front of his right arm. From 1915 to 1919 he studied law and political science. In 1920 he received his doctorate as a doctor. pole. In January 1918 Schumacher joined the SPD. He was political editor of the "Swabian Tagwacht" in Stuttgart, a member of the Württemberg Landtag, the Reichstag and since 1930 chairman of the SPD in Stuttgart. After Hitler's seizure of power Schumacher immediately participated in the resistance against the Nazi regime and was arrested on 6 July 1933. This was followed by almost 10 years of suffering through prisons and concentration camps. As a late consequence of the concentration camp prison his left leg had to be amputated. From Hannover began for the undoubtedly leading man of social democracy the reconstruction of the SPD. The congress in Hanover in 1946 elected him party chairman. He held this office until his death in 1952. In the first German Bundestag he became chairman of the SPD parliamentary group. Schumacher's political goals were the reunification of Germany in freedom, the right of self-determination and the equal rights of Germany in international politics. Kurt Schumacher is one of the founding fathers of the Federal Republic of Germany. (Text: Wolfgang Gröf, Friedrich Ebert Foundation, Bonn)
