Helmut Käutner, born on March 25, 1908 in Dusseldorf, was one of Germany's most prolific and respected filmmakers. As a director, scriptwriter, producer and actor he participated in more than 80 film productions. His 1943-44 film "Große Freiheit Nr. 7" with Hans Albers established Käutner's international reputation as a director. Many of his works became classic films such as »The Devil's General« with Curd Jürgens, »The Last Bridge« with Maria Schell and »The Captain von Köpenick« with Heinz Rühmann. In the 1960s and 1970s Käutner shot more television films (including episodes of the crime series "crime scene" and "Derrick") and staged plays. Helmut Käutner died on April 20, 1980 in his house in Tuscany.
