Helmut Andreas Paul Grieshaber was born on 15 February 1909 in Rot am Rot in Upper Swabia; Under the acronym HAP Grieshaber he made a name for himself as an artist. Inspired by medieval Einblattholzschnitten, Grieshaber turned early to the woodcut. During the Nazi dictatorship, he was banned from work. After the Second World War, HAP Grieshaber further developed the woodcut technique. In contrast to the hitherto customary for the woodcut small formats he created monumental murals. One of his greatest works is a tree trunk of twelve meters in length, processed into a wooden stick, which stands in the town hall of Reutlingen. HAP Grieshaber died 72 years old on May 12, 1981 in Einingen under Achalm near Reutlingen.
