Hans von Dohnanyi is one of the central figures of German resistance against National Socialism. Born in Vienna, the lawyer studied since 1905 in Berlin. Despite his rejection of racist ideology in 1934 he became the office manager of the Reich Justice Minister Franz Gürtner. Through his official duties Dohnanyi was informed early on violent crime and mass murder of the Nazis. In September 1942, an action he had planned brought 14 Jews to safety in Switzerland. On April 5, Dohnanyi was arrested, sentenced to long term imprisonment in the Sachsenhausen concentration camp and probably executed there on April 9, 1945.
