Gerd Bucerius came to 1906 in the Westphalian Hamm to world. After studying law, he worked as a lawyer in Hamburg and also represented many Jewish clients during the National Socialist dictatorship. In 1946 he became a member of the CDU and 1949 member of the Bundestag. In 1961, he resigned his mandate to avoid conflicts of interest with his main business, the publishing industry. Gerd Bucerius was involved in founding the periodical DIE ZEIT and the publishing house Gruner & Jahr. He published the magazine "Stern" and served as Chairman of the Supervisory Board of the Bertelsmann Group. He promoted many art projects throughout his life. His fortune inherited the non-profit »ZEIT Foundation Ebelin and Gerd Bucerius«. Gerd Bucerius died in 1995 in Hamburg.
