The writer Erich Kästner was born on February 23, 1899 in Dresden. After graduating from high school and studying German philology, history, philosophy and theater studies, he moved to Berlin in 1927 where he worked as a freelancer for various newspapers and magazines. One year later, Kästner's first volume of poetry »Herz auf Taille« was published. He became known later, especially as a children's book author. Still unforgotten today - his books »Emil and the Detectives«, »Pünktchen and Anton« or »The Flying Classroom«. "Emil and the detectives" appeared in 1929 and has since been translated into over fifty languages and filmed several times. In all books the young protagonists as self-employed people are taken seriously. The stories contain morality without moralizing and contain an element of fairytale: the world is shown as it should be. Kästner was column manager of a newspaper, published a youth magazine and founded two cabarets in Munich. Erich Kästner died on July 29, 1974 in Munich.
