The famous Austrian writer was born on 2 September 1894 in Brody (Galicia). Joseph Roth was in the tradition of Western-Austrian Ostjudentum, which was hit particularly hard by the downfall of the Danube monarchy. While working as a journalist and correspondent for the Frankfurter Zeitung, he worked in Vienna and Berlin. In 1933 he left Germany and later lived mostly in Paris. There the brilliant stylist and columnist died on 27 May 1939 in the poorhouse. Among his most important works include the novels "The Spider Web" (1923), "Radetzky March" (1932) and the "Capuchin Crypt" (1938). His work gives the reader a socio-critical image of his time.
