The "self-portrait with a doll", which can be seen on the stamp, is one of Wacker's most important expressive works. The artist experienced the First World War as a front-line soldier until he was taken into Russian captivity in October 1915, from which he was released only in 1920. When he publicly showed his work for the first time in an exhibition in Bregenz in 1925, the outrage was great. Above all, his still lifes, which show unusual combinations of objects, met with great public misunderstanding. Throughout his life, Wacker remained a controversial artist in his immediate home. Early on, he recognized the political development of the 1930s and, with his critical attitude toward National Socialism, was increasingly confronted with difficulties that were also responsible for the rapid deterioration in his state of health. On April 19, 1938, the artist died of heart disease.
