The architect Clemens Holzmeister was born on March 27, 1886 in Fulpmes in Tyrol. He attended the Technical University in Vienna, where he received his doctorate in 1919. In 1923 he was awarded the 3rd prize for his design in the competition for a crematorium in Vienna. This modest price meant a turnaround in his life. Although only ranked third, his design came to fruition, and after completion of the crematorium, the College of Professors at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna suggested Holzmeister as head of the architectural class. The appointment took place on January 15, 1924. In 1926, the Salzburg Governor Dr. Franz Rehrl for the redesign of the Festspielhaus to Salzburg, a year later he built in the new Turkish capital Ankara several government buildings. In 1928 he received a teaching assignment to the Academy in Dusseldorf, which followed orders for several churches in Germany. In 1931 he became rector of the Art Academy, in 1933 he was president of the General German Catholic Day in Vienna. In 1938, after the annexation of Austria to Hitler Germany, he was relieved of duty; his writings were confiscated. But he was fortunate enough to be called to Ankara that same year to project the parliament building there. Clemens Holzmeister died on June 12, 1983 at the age of 98. His catalog raisonné covered 673 projects, when in 1982 the Academy of Fine Arts dedicated a retrospective.
