Max Mell was born on November 10, 1882 in Marburg on the Danube and came to Vienna in 1886 with his parents. He studied German and art history at the University of Vienna, where he received his doctorate in philosophy in 1905. From the beginning he showed the inclination to stay away from artistic schools and groups, to stand indifferent to refusing literary fashion trends. With the novels still published during his studies (1904) and the novels published in 1906 under the title "The Three Graces of Dreams", Mell proved to be a form artist influenced by classical languages. After the "Viennese Kripperl of 1919", under the immediate impression of the first post-war period, those works were created that established his fame: "The Act of the Apostles" (1922/23), "The Guardian Angel Game" (1923) and "The Succession of the Christ Game" (1923-1926). Already the "Viennese Kripperl" exhibits the most essential characteristic of the works of the poet. He combines mystery-like with a somewhat astonishing realism. Love and Christianity are presented as the eternal values that alone can help our time. A statement that Mell maintained until his death in 1971.
