The famous artist was born on March 23, 1878 in Tiffen, Carinthia, and christened Leo. Lobisser attended high school in Klagenfurt and wanted to become a minister. So he studied theology first in Klagenfurt, then in St. Paul, where he immediately felt at home. There he was consecrated in 1903, was named Suitbert and became Konvikt prefect. After he did not feel well in this function, he trained as a drawing teacher in Vienna at the Academy and worked as such from 1908 in St. Paul. In addition to frescoes, which he created in the coming decades in the Carinthian region, he became famous above all as a woodcutter. In 1923 and 1924, the woodcuts created by Lobisser up to that time were exhibited in the Secession in Vienna. Among other things Lobisser delivered in 1927 the woodcuts to the poems selected by Max Mell in the "Haustrunk aus dem Wunderbründl deutsche Lyrik". He was a member of the Künstlerhaus and received in 1928/29 the golden state medal. As the brand motif of the anniversary brand, the beautiful portrait woodcut "Bergbauern" by Suitbert Lobisser was chosen. It was created in 1936, shows the characteristic style of this artist and represents a masterpiece of woodcut art.
