On June 7, 1905, the architecture students Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Fritz Bleyl, Erich Heckel, and Karl Schmidt-Rottluff founded the artist group »The Bridge«. Their intention was no longer the faithful reproduction of the seen, but the representation of the personally perceived. Forms were exaggerated and painted abstractly, colors alienated. The group also included such eminent painters as Emil Nolde and Max Pechstein. In 1913, however, the union dissolved because of internal disagreements. The founding of the »Brücke« marks the beginning of an artistic movement that went down in art history under the name »Expressionism«. It represents the most important German contribution to the art of the modern age.
